I think this is a very simple question, but I don't get it, how to add a Filter from Sheet1, to a Layoutcontainer where the filters from sheet2 are already in.

If you are having trouble seeing a particular filter that you just added in the dashboard, then go back and make sure you have selected "Show Filter" for that filter in the original worksheet. Then you may have to remove and re-add that worksheet to the dashboard to get the new filter to show up so you can drag it around.

Thanks sankar. The Answer from Rohan worked really well!Before joining the Data School dashboard formatting was a nightmare. I thought that the sizing and position of things relied on the eye alone and would spent ages resizing things and trying to make them align in an aesthetically pleasing way. Since learning about containers creating clean looking Dashboards has become much quicker and easier. Containers allow you to essentially group dashboard objects sheets, text, images, filters etc.

This means the container itself can be moved anywhere on the dashboard and and the dashboard objects within will stay the same size and in the same position relative to each other. This allows for rapid AB testing of dashboard designs as groups of objects can be swapped around and moved about on the dashboard.

Objects within the containers can also be swapped in and out easily. Horizontal and vertical containers can be dragged from here into a dashboard — but whether they are vertical or horizontal depends on the second object you place within.

Whenever you drag your first object onto a dashboard Tableau automatically creates a container to house this object. If, like me pre-Data School, you never used containers you will then continue to drag the other objects required to build the dashboard into this overall container and re-position and resize them within.

It is actually much easier to do this formatting by planning how you want the dashboard to look like beforehand and then building it out using containers and blanks. Different views can then be tested once the initial planned view has been built. But before all this you need to know how containers work. Containers are split into two types, vertical and horizontal. You can see the hierarchy of containers in the item hierarchy on the layout tab, and can select objects or containers using this. Item hierarchy — containers and objects within containers. To select a container housing other containers you can use the same method with the drop-down for a container within.

This means you can add things to a dashboard or change the size of the dashboard without worrying about the size and position of the objects changing as well.The features that help us dig deeper into data to get context-specific insights are filters.

Filters allow us to select, deselect required content from the data. Their significance in visual analytics lies in the fact that filtered data directly affects the visualization facilitating quick and easy insight capturing. Tableau provides multiple options to add and apply filters.

In Tableau, we can use a filter in a worksheet, across worksheets as well as in dashboards. Based on the context, relevant functionalities get associated with filters. Before adding filters in the Tableau dashboard, we must ensure that they are meaningful in the given context.

For this demonstration, we are considering the Distribution Unit Volume data.

The data contains details pertaining to volume distributed across different distribution units lying in different regions. Using this data, we will create sheets, build a dashboard and finally add the filter to the dashboard. In this case, it is Microsoft Excel, so click on Microsoft Excel and load the data. As illustrated below, selecting the West region in the pie charts gives total volume distribution for West in the DU Volume Contribution analysis also. Now, we want the filter to appear over the dashboard. For that go to More Options, and in Filters select the field over which we want to create a filter.

Like in this case, we created a filter for Mode as shown below. The filter appears on the right side of the dashboard as can be seen in the screenshot subsequent to the below screenshot. We can change the way we want to display the filter by right-clicking over it and selecting the suitable option. Like, in this case, we preferred to have a filter as a dropdown menu. This is because the filter is applied over the former analysis, and to have it work over the latter also, we need to apply it over all the sheets.

We must remember that if two or more analyses have common fields over which the filter is generated, then only that filter will work for those analyses.

Size and Lay Out Your Dashboard

We are considering to upgrade from While testing, we ran into a floating filter issue while testing the Inside of floating container, it has 3 filters. See below. But in Yes, I can remove all the filter and start over again. But that will be unproductive. Unless I can resolve this issue, we will not be able to upgrade to the Same issue in the Web Edit on the Please let me know if these is a setting I can change to fix this.

Can you create a small mockup workbook showing this issue, without any confidential data? I'd like to see how exactly the containers are structured and see if we can come up with a workaround. What you are describing is that the filter is just floating independent any other containers. The screen shot you showed for Hi, Thank you for replying.

Please see attached files for the Tableau Workbook and Excel file as data. Sorry, you will need to reconnect in the data source. I would prefer to keep the floating filter floating and not Shift drag into the container because I can place the filter in the blank container anyway I like. If there is a way to put a blank container on top for me to place my filters will works too. Tableau put it into this vertical container that is tiled in your tiled section of your dashboard.

You could click on that filter in the container in that structure, and then just set it to floating at the top of the layout panel:.
